Description
Hill Sampson is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a private dwelling. It likely dates from the late 16th century and was remodeled in the 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features painted rendered stone and cob construction, with a slate roof and asbestos slate at the rear. The roof has gable ends, and the lower ridge level is at the lower end of the building.
There is a front lateral hall stack with offsets and a smaller stack at the right lower gable end. The layout consists of a two-room and through-passage plan, with the hall located at the upper end on the left, heated by the front lateral stack and seemingly having an integral rear outshut. The lower end may have been rebuilt in the 19th century, containing a small service room at the rear and a small heated room at the front, possibly a parlour. The two rooms are separated by a staircase that runs up from the center right-hand side of the through-passage.
The building is two storeys high and has a two-window range with 20th-century fenestration featuring two-light casements. A wide lean-to porch with a slate roof extends to the left, enclosing the front of the lateral hall stack and the bread oven projection. The entrance to the through-passage has a 19th-century four-panelled door, with the upper panels being glazed.
Inside, the most notable early feature is a gentle ogee-headed timber doorway with iron pintles at the rear of the hall, which leads to the rear outshut. The roughly chamfered fireplace lintel has been replaced in the 20th century, and there are no ceiling beams. The remaining interior features include 19th-century joinery, such as doors and staircase, which are mostly intact. The roof over the hall was also replaced in the 20th century.
