Description

Pennyford is a former pair of cottages, now converted into a single residence, likely built in the late 18th century, with internal alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a rendered cob upper storey and features a half-hipped thatch roof with brick stacks at each end. Lean-tos at each end have corrugated asbestos roofs and provide external access. Originally, the cottages had a mirror plan with single rooms, each divided at the rear to create separate scullery or pantry spaces. The original staircases' locations are unclear but were probably opposite the entrance doorways. In the 20th century, all internal partitions were removed to create a large ground floor room, and a new staircase was added along the rear wall. The building has two storeys and a symmetrical two-window range. The upper storey retains its original 2-light casements, each with eight small leaded square panes. The ground floor features two late 19th-century 3-light casements, each with three panes per light. There are two central doorways, with the right-hand doorway blocked and a window inserted. A 20th-century lean-to glass and timber porch is present. At the rear upper storey, there is a 2-light casement, one of which retains its leaded cames and glass. Inside, although altered in the 20th century, the bread ovens remain in each fireplace; the right one has a double-handled cloam oven door, while the left features a cast iron door.
