Description
House on Props is a building that now serves as a restaurant with accommodation above. It is possibly from the early 18th century, though it is reputed to date back to the 16th century. The structure is made of rendered and painted stone rubble, featuring a slate-hung gable end on the harbour side and a slate roof with gable ends on the main range.
There is a projecting wing that jetties over the stream, which originally had a hipped end but has since been remodelled and enlarged to face the harbour. The building likely began as two rooms with the jettied wing creating an overall 'L' shape plan. The entrance is located at the outer angle of the projecting wing and the main range, which has been retained despite internal alterations.
The house has three storeys with asymmetrical elevations. The elevation facing Talland Street features three storeys, with the ground floor showcasing a 16-pane window on the left and a canted 19th-century bow window with decorative glazing bars and beaded mullions, both beneath a wide timber lintel. To the right, there is a bay window and a glazed door, both with similar glazing bars. The first floor includes a 19th-century two-light casement window, a small rectangular window, and another two-light casement to the right. The second floor has additional casement windows.
The elevation towards the harbour has a gable end on the main range, with the ground floor featuring an 18-pane 19th-century shop window. Above, there is a two-light casement in an opening for a sash window, and a three-light casement has been inserted in the gable end. The projecting wing to the right has been completely remodelled in the 20th century, with modern fenestration in the side wall overlooking the harbour. The projecting wing jetties over the stream, supported by oak props, which gives the building its name. The upper floors have not been inspected.
