The Smugglers House

The Smugglers House is a house located on Talland Street in Polperro, possibly dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble with asbestos slate hanging above the first floor on the gable end. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and features an asymmetrical front gable end. The house has a double depth, two-room plan with an entrance passage on the right that may contain stairs. There are three storeys and a basement, with an asymmetrical arrangement of windows on the front. The entrance to the basement is on the left, accessed by stone rubble steps. The ground floor includes a likely 20th-century eight-pane shop window on the left and a 20th-century four-panel stable-type door on the right, which has a timber hood above it. The first floor features a 20th-century three-light casement window and a 20th-century cross window in the gable end of the second floor. The interior has not been inspected. The basement originally served as a store but is now part of the adjacent museum.
