Description
Captains Cabin is a house, likely with fish cellars below, that later served as a restaurant and domestic accommodation. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a cement-washed scantle slate roof featuring gable ends and at least one early crested ridge tile. The building has large stone rubble chimney stacks on the gable ends, and there was originally a rear lateral chimney stack that is now blocked with the shaft removed.
The plan has been altered, but the first floor was originally designed with a three-room layout and a cross passage over the fish cellars. The house is three storeys tall with an asymmetrical three-window front. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century 16-pane window on the left next to a part-glazed 20th-century door, both beneath a slate lean-to roof. To the right, there is a 20th-century two-light casement window. Near the center, stone rubble steps lead up to the first floor entrance, which is part glazed and set back beneath a gabled slate porch roof, locally known as an "orrel."
The first floor features openings beneath timber lintels, with a 19th-century two-light casement window to the left, also with glazing bars, and two additional two-light casements to the right. The second floor has two 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements that include glazing bars, and to the right, there is a 20th-century raking roof dormer. The interior of the ground floor has been altered, showcasing some heavy reused timber ceiling beams, and the lintels to the fireplaces have been renewed. The first floor retains ceiling beams from the 18th century, while the roof timbers have not been inspected.
