Description
Mermaid Cottage is a cottage dating from around the early 19th century, situated on Lansallos Street in Polperro, Cornwall. The structure is built from rendered and painted stone rubble, featuring a slate roof with gable ends. It has brick chimney stacks on the front gabled end and the right side, and a further stack on the rear gable end. Mermaid Cottage appears to be a later addition projecting to the front of The Court and an adjoining cottage located at the rear. It is likely it has always been a separate cottage and not part of the range behind.
The cottage has three storeys and a regular, single-windowed gabled front. The front features a partly boarded 20th-century plank door, with a 19th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars to the right. A 19th-century four-pane sash window is positioned above the entrance, and a 20th-century window is set directly above it, within a sash opening. Further 19th- and 20th-century casements are present on the side walls. The interior has not been inspected. The cottage is included on the list for its group value.
