Description
Quarry Cottage is a house dating from the early 19th century, located on the north side of The Warren in Lansallos, Polperro. The building is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and features an asbestos slate roof, which has a hipped lower end on the left and a gabled higher end on the right. There are two stone rubble chimney stacks on the right-hand gable end. The house has a single depth plan and is built into the side of a rock, presenting a three-storey elevation to the front and a two-storey elevation to the rear. It may have originally served as stores on the ground floor.
The front elevation has a regular three-window arrangement. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century cross window to the left with glazing bars, a 20th-century two-light casement with glazing bars at the center, and a 20th-century partly glazed door next to it. To the right, there is a 20th-century part-glazed plank stable-type door and a small 20th-century window. The first floor features two 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars in original openings, with a 19th-century window to the right. There is also a three-light 20th-century casement in an enlarged opening to the right. The upper floor has similar fenestration to the first floor.
The interior has not been inspected. Historical photographs from the 19th century show the three-storey harbour elevation with three two-light casements on the first and second floors, and possibly openings for storage on the ground floor. Quarry Cottage is included for its group value, contributing significantly to the harbour scene. A photograph taken in the 1860s by Lewis Harding is referenced in A. Lanyon's "The Rooks of Trelawne" from 1976.
