Description
Church Green Cottage is a house that dates from the 18th century or earlier. It is constructed of colourwashed and rendered materials, likely cob and stone, and features a thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at the right end. The cottage is attached to Winterstoke Cottage on the left side. There is a brick chimney stack at the right end and a rear lateral stack for a wing, although the shaft of this stack has been dismantled.
The layout of the interior has not been inspected, so the specific details of the plan are unclear. The house is arranged in an L shape, with the main range facing south. It is single depth and probably consists of two rooms wide, with an entrance located on the front to the left. A single depth rear right wing extends at right angles to the main range, featuring a doorway on the left side and appearing to have been heated by the rear lateral stack. This wing is currently used for storage and may pre-date the main range. The house is situated adjacent to the churchyard, where the ground level aligns with the eaves of the thatch.
The cottage has two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window south front. To the left, there is a plank front door with a gabled porch canopy. The ground floor window to the right of the door is a two-light casement with two panes per light, while the window further right is a one-light casement, also with two panes per light. On the first floor, the windows in the centre and to the right are two-light casements with three panes per light, and the left window is a two-light casement featuring lapped glass.
On the east elevation of the wing, there are buttresses, a wide plank door to the left, and an 18th-century two-light casement window with square leaded panes to the right. There is also one first-floor two-light casement window with three panes per light.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have early carpentry. The exterior of the building remains charmingly unspoiled, suggesting that there may be interesting features preserved inside.
