Description

Winterstoke Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with renovations from the 20th century. The building is whitewashed and rendered, except for the left end wall, which is made of volcanic trap rubble. It features a thatched roof with a plain ridge that is gabled at the left end, adjoining Church Green Cottage on the right. The cottage has an axial stack with a brick shaft.

The current layout consists of a single depth, two rooms wide, with a larger heated room on the left. There is an entrance to the right of centre that leads into a stair hall, and a smaller, unheated room on the right. At the rear left, there is a single-storey slate-roofed lean-to, which is likely a later addition. A second doorway on the front right has been replaced with a window. The rear of the house faces the churchyard, where the ground is level with the thatch eaves.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. A 20th-century front door is located to the right of centre, sheltered by a gabled porch canopy. To the left of the door, there are two ground floor windows with segmental brick arches, glazed with two-light casements, three panes per light. There is a similar window to the right of the door, which has a square head in the position of a former doorway. The first floor features two similar windows. The left return of the building has a blocked first floor window with a brick arch.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to be thoroughly modernised. Winterstoke Cottage is part of an attractive group of thatched cottages surrounding the churchyard.
