Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly used as a rectory, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a stuccoed exterior with blocked-out volcanic stone rubble and a hipped slate roof supported by five brick stacks. The building has a U-shaped plan, with a rectangular main range facing south, connected to a narrower service range by a short block on the east side. There may have been a narrow service yard between the main range and the wing, but dense undergrowth makes this hard to confirm.
The main range is single-depth and consists of two rooms, with a central entrance leading into a hall that has an open well stair illuminated by a skylight. The left room is heated by an axial stack, while the right room is heated by a stack at the end. At the rear right, there is a two-room block that connects the main range to the service range, which has been converted into flats. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with three windows. Steps lead up to a Tuscan stone porch with an entablature, featuring a timber front door with a rectangular fanlight above. The first-floor window above the porch is a 12-pane sash, while the outer windows are 16-pane sashes with louvred sun shutters on the ground floor.
On the east elevation, there are five first-floor 12-pane sash windows, one ground-floor sash window to the left, followed by a French window with glazing bars, and then two more 12-pane sashes. There is also a panelled door leading into the linking block and two modern casement windows with glazing bars on the right side. The north elevation of the service block has first-floor sash windows.
Inside, the principal rooms display good contemporary details, including internal shutters and Adam style chimney-pieces. The stair features stick balusters, turned newels, a ramped wreathed handrail, and a curved balustrade on the first floor.
