Description

Calendar Cottage is a house that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features partly exposed local stone rubble and areas that are colourwashed and rendered, possibly over cob. It has a thatched roof with a plain ridge and is gabled at the right end, with an axial stack that has a brick shaft.

The house has a single depth range and backs onto the churchyard, where the ground level is even with the eaves of the thatch. It is aligned with the rear right wing of Church Green Cottage. The details of the interior plan were unclear at the time of the survey in 1988 as it was not inspected, but the right end of the house, which has two changes of plane on the front elevation, is likely an addition. The axial stack may have originally been a right end stack. Disturbances in the masonry of the rear wall suggest that there may have been rebuilding or a dismantled stack related to an earlier block, which is likely two rooms wide.

The exterior of Calendar Cottage is two storeys on the left and centre, with a single storey on the right. It has an asymmetrical front with three windows, and the eaves thatch is eyebrowed over the two left-hand windows. The front elevation steps back twice to the right of the stack. There is a 20th-century front door to the left of centre, accompanied by a buttress to the right, and a second 20th-century front door leading into the single-storey block on the right. The windows are 20th-century timber casements with small panes. The rear elevation, facing the churchyard, has a somewhat ragged masonry joint on the right and features two 2-light casement windows on that side, with the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the first-floor window. There is also a likely 20th-century attic dormer in the thatch.

Although the interior was not inspected, Calendar Cottage is part of an important group of thatched houses located adjacent to the churchyard and within the conservation area.
