Description

This is a group of three late 18th-century town houses located on Arwenack Street, Falmouth. The buildings are constructed of painted rubble with granite quoins, timber lintels to the ground floor, and shallow segmental brick arches above. The roof is of dry slate to the left-hand building (number 37), while the remaining portion has an original scantle slate roof with a hipped design at a higher level. Brick end stacks are present.

The buildings are arranged with a double-depth plan and are three storeys high, with a basement or cellar beneath. They have a 2:3-window arrangement. Most of the windows are original 12-pane hornless sashes, with the exception of number 37, where the glazing bars have been removed from the second-floor sashes and replacement windows have been installed on the ground floor. The ground floor has an irregular, late 19th-century shop front featuring basket-arched lights, with three bays on the left leading to a splayed doorway with sidelights and four bays on the right, plus a return light on the right. A two-pane sash window, dating from the late 19th century, sits above a small basement opening that retains its original iron grille.

The right-hand return elevation is of a 2/3-window range with an original sash window to the first floor on the left; the remaining windows are later horned sashes. An original pilastered doorway with a pair of panelled doors is centrally positioned within the fenestration; a later doorway is situated towards the left. The interior has not been inspected. Aside from alterations related to the shop front insertion, the buildings retain a notably complete appearance for their date.
