Description

Two town houses, dating from the 18th century and built on a 17th-century site, are located at 16 and 18 Lower Market Street, Penryn. The buildings are constructed from coursed local stone rubble with stuccoed timber lintels, and have a steep asbestos slate roof. Rear lateral stacks are also present. The layout is U-shaped, including rear wings at right angles. The houses are three storeys high with a four-window front. The second floor has late 19th-century four-pane horned sash windows, with the window left of centre blocked and painted over (originally 16 panes). The first floor features 20th-century replacement windows. The ground floor has been altered with a late 19th-century shop front incorporating mullions returning to the lights. A three-panel door is located on the right-hand side (No.18), whilst No.16 has a 20th-century shop front and a 20th-century door on the far right. The interior remains uninspected, but is likely to be of interest. The buildings possess group value.
