Description
This is a town house located on Higher Market Street in Penryn, originally dating from the 16th century, with significant remodelling in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The front facade is stuccoed over a rubble base, with a steep dry roof and a cast-iron ogee gutter. The building has a U-shaped plan, with a very deep rear wing on the right that is part of Nos 1-4 Eason’s Yard. It stands three storeys high, with a four-window front. The windows are late 19th or early 20th century sashes with margin panes. The ground floor features two late 19th/early 20th century shop fronts; the shop at No.19 has a two-light design with a canted sidelight and a four-panel top-glazed door, while the shop at No.21 has a four-light double shop front with splayed sidelights and a glazed door. The rear wing of No.21 incorporates reused granite fragments from a 17th century mullioned window. The interior was extensively renovated around 1980, work leading to the removal of a 17th century four-light wooden window, an old staircase, and a 16th century moulded beam, which had been repurposed as a wall plate and a 1700s bolection-moulded chimney-piece. Surviving features include a 16th century floor with moulded oak beams and joists in the rear wing, a blocked half of a 16th century four-centred arched lateral fireplace, and a 16th century roof structure above with curved feet to the trusses, cranked mortised collars and threaded purlins. One bay of 16th century moulded joists were reused in No.1 Eason’s Yard.
