Description
This is a town house, originally built on a 17th-century site and dating from the 18th century, with later remodelling in the late 19th century. The front of the building is stuccoed over studwork, with a steep slate roof, a cast-iron ogee gutter, and a moulded eaves cornice. It is a double-depth range, with a front façade flanking a through-passage that leads to a narrow courtyard, surrounded by two deep rear wings set at right angles. The building is two storeys high and has a three-bay, three-window arrangement. The central window is a mid-19th century twelve-pane hornless sash, flanked by late-19th century oriel bays with polygonal roofs and late-19th century two-pane horned sashes. A late-19th century six-light shop front with arched lights and slender mullions is on the right, with return lights to a central doorway including a glazed door and overlight. A flat 20th-century shop front is on the left, with an open doorway to its right, featuring a planked door and a small display window. The rear of the building has a mid-19th century window to the partly slate-hung courtyard elevation on the left-hand wing, while the other wing has 20th-century windows. The interiors of the shops have been altered in the 20th century; the remainder of the building was not inspected, but is likely to be of interest.
