Description

7 and 9 Higher Market Street is a town house that has been converted into two houses with shops. It dates from the mid to late 19th century, possibly involving refronting or remodelling of an earlier 16th-century building. The front is finished in stucco on studwork, with a roof concealed behind a moulded parapet and brick stacks at the ends. The building has a double-depth plan with two deep wings extending at right angles to the rear. It stands three storeys high and features a three-window range. The second floor has mid to late 19th-century four-pane hornless sash windows above canted oriel bays with moulded cornices, while the first floor has similar sashes. The ground floor showcases a late 19th-century three-light shop front with panelled consoles supporting a sloping fascia for No. 7 on the left, and a double shop front of the same period on the right. There is a passage doorway to the left of centre, which has panelled reveals and round-arched top panels, along with a three-panel door and a margin-paned overlight with coloured glass. The left-hand shop window features carved heads on slender mullions, while the other shop has leaded diamond panes above the transom. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
