Description
49 and 50 Fore Street is a town house with later shops, dating from the early 19th century. The building features incised stucco on studwork at the second floor, which has been replaced with render at the first floor. The other elevations are constructed from rubble with brick dressings, and it has a bitumen-grouted slate roof with brick end stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and consists of three storeys above a basement, with a three-window range. The windows have been altered in the 20th century.
The late 19th-century shop fronts have panelled pilasters. The rear elevation also has a three-window range, showcasing original 16-pane hornless sashes, a tall 48-pane stair sash, and a round-arched central ground-floor window with a concentric fanlight head. The right-hand end wall features a pair of 15-pane casements in the gable above the tall 48-pane stair sash, which is situated above a doorway with a margin-glazed overlight and a four-panel flush-beaded door. The shops have been altered in the late 20th century, but the interior has not been inspected.
