Description
The Market House in Bodmin was built in 1839 by William Harris. It is constructed from granite ashlar and features a plinth, channelled rustication to the sill string, recessed architraves, and an entablature topped with a moulded parapet cornice. The building has a deep rectangular plan and is a single storey with a symmetrical front consisting of one central bay flanked by three bays on each side. The central bays, which were originally open, are framed by flat Doric pilasters that have carved bulls' heads on the frieze above. There is a small window on each side bay. The rear of the building is a two-storey range with five windows made of local rubble. The interior was remodelled in the 20th century. The Market House is an excellent example of its type, notable for its striking Greek Revival facade and detailed carving.
