Description
No. 24 Fore Street is a probable merchant's house, likely built in the 17th century, with its front remodeled in the 18th century. The building features incised stucco on studwork, designed to simulate flat arches with voussoirs, and has a steep dry slate roof with a moulded eaves cornice. There is a brick stack on the right side. The structure has a deep plan that includes a deep 16th-century wing at right angles. It stands three storeys high with a two-window range. The mid-19th century windows are paired 2-light hornless sashes set within moulded wooden architraves. The ground floor has a large late 20th-century shop front, along with a house doorway on the right that features a 20th-century six-panel door. Inside, the shop has been altered in the late 20th century, but there is said to be an interesting fireplace in the first-floor chamber.
