Description

No. 22 and the Guildhall is a building located on Fore Street in Bodmin, dating from the 17th century, with a front that was likely remodeled in the mid-19th century. The front features render that has replaced stucco on studwork, while the rest of the building is constructed from rubble with granite dressings. It has a scantle slate roof, with part of it being bitumen-grouted, and a brick stack on the left side. The building has a deep plan that includes a 17th-century rear wing at right angles to the main structure.

It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range on the second floor. The mid-19th-century tripartite hornless sashes have glazing bars, except for the central 12-pane sash above a blind bay. The first floor features moulded hoods on consoles. Above the possibly original doorway, there is a Royal Coat of Arms flanked by two granite columns with moulded capitals. On either side, there are 20th-century pilastered shop fronts topped with a full-width moulded entablature and fascia.

The rear wing contains four original granite mullioned windows on the left-hand wall, which include two three-light windows and one two-light window, all with hoodmoulds. The opposite elevation has a late 19th-century window in a similar style.

Inside, the rear wing is open to a late 19th-century scissor-truss roof structure. There is a gallery at the front end with a late 19th-century turned balustrade, as well as a late 19th-century open-well, open-string staircase featuring turned balusters, newels, and pendants, along with a moulded ceiling cornice above.
