Description
No. 8 Fore Street is a town house with a later shop, dating from the 17th century and later remodelled. It features incised stucco on a timber frame that jetties out at the second floor, topped with an asbestos slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan that includes a rear extension and stands three storeys high with a two-window range. The windows include early to mid-19th century hornless sashes, twelve-pane sashes with moulded architraves on the second floor, and 18th century tripartite sashes on the first floor, although the centre lights have had their thick glazing bars removed. The ground floor showcases a late 19th or early 20th century full-width transomed double shop front, featuring dressed granite stall risers, moulded sills, end pilasters, and a moulded entablature with a fascia. It has a shallow splayed central doorway with a glazed and panelled door. Additionally, there is a carved medieval fragment set into the wall, likely from the former friary.
Inside, the ground and first floors were altered in the late 20th century. The second floor retains three 18th century two-panel doors, one of which has bolection moulding, along with a circa 1800 winder stair. The roof structure was not inspected but is said to be a 20th century replacement of the original, featuring pegged trusses and evidence suggesting it was originally thatched.
