Description

The building comprises a clock tower and attached turret house, located on a corner plot on Fore Street in Bodmin. The clock tower was built in 1845, with the attached house following slightly later. The clock tower is constructed of granite ashlar with rusticated quoin pilasters. The house is likely of stucco on studwork construction, showing sill strings and moulded hoods on consoles. The roofs are slate, with a polygonal roof over the clock tower and moulded, dentilled eaves.

The building stands on a polygonal corner site. The clock tower is a square plan, and the house is three storeys high with varying window arrangements – a 2-window range at a receding angle, a 1-window range, and a 3-window return. Late 20th-century shop fronts occupy the ground floor.

The clock tower is in an Italianate style. It has a giant stage with a round-arched, vermiculated doorway containing an iron-studded oak door. Above the doorway is a plaque inscribed “J.B. COLLINS, MAYOR,” and a half-domed niche. A moulded entablature is surmounted by a date in Roman numerals to the frieze. The design culminates in a clockface within a scrolled pediment, set on a panelled base, topped by a bellcote with round-arched openings. The tower also features panelled corner pilasters rising to a moulded entablature, panelled corner acroteria, and a central dome. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process.
