Description

This is a mid-19th century corner building, likely originally two houses with a large shop. It stands on a corner site on Fore Street, Bodmin. The exterior is stuccoed over a timber frame, with moulded architraves, sill brackets, and a moulded eave line supported by brackets. The roof is slate, with bitumen grouting and a late 19th century gabled dormer to the left. A brick stack is present on the right side, and a cast-iron ogee gutter runs along the top. The building has a double-depth plan with a canted front, and presents an 8-window range across a 1:2:2:1:2-bay facade. The windows are mostly original 2-pane hornless sashes, with some later additions with horns; the left-hand bay features wider windows, and a tripartite sash sits above a later transomed window. A pilastered doorway, topped with a moulded hood on consoles, provides access via five granite steps to a 20th-century glazed door and overlight. A three-storey, four-bay shop front is present on the right side, featuring Ionic columns dividing the bays, a pilaster on the left end, a column with a doorway on its left at the right end, and 20th-century glazed doors and plate-glass shop windows. The interior retains many original features including moulded ceiling cornices, a dogleg staircase with a closed string and column-over-vase turned balusters, at least one 19th-century chimney piece, two iron grates, and queen-post roof structures. The Greek Revival shopfront is a notable example of its type.
