Description
This is an early to mid-19th century house with a shop on the street corner, located in Chacewater. The walls are stuccoed over a timber frame, and the roof is covered with scantle slate, with hips to the right (east) side and over the adjoining party wall to the left. A lower, parallel roof runs along the rear. Brick chimneys are situated over the party wall to the left, an axial stack, and over the rear wall of the front part of the building. The original layout comprised one room for the house and two narrow rooms to the rear.
The building is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The first floor has three symmetrically placed 12-pane hornless sash windows, each with a moulded wooden architrave. A later sash window without glazing bars is located on the ground floor to the left. The central doorway has an overlight and a pilastered doorcase. The entablature above the doorway extends to the right, over the corner shop. The shopfront features three elliptically headed lights on each side, and a doorway on the left-hand side of the front. The entablature above the shopfront has a dentilled cornice and console brackets at the ends, continuing to the right over a blind wall. A 20th-century canted bay window has been added above on the end wall, which also features stucco rusticated quoins.
The rear range’s east wall has a four-pane window with two elliptically arched lights, and a round-arch headed sash window with horns and glazing bars above it. The corner on the right side is splayed to allow carriage access. Cast iron ogee gutters are present throughout the building. The interior has not been inspected.
Chacewater is notable for the survival of its 19th-century shopfronts, and this building represents an interesting example.
