Description

Two adjoining houses, originally with two shops, were built in the early 19th century in Chacewater. They are constructed of killas rubble with elvan quoins, jambstones, and arch stones. The roof is covered in asbestos slate and slopes down to the rear, featuring a brick chimney over the gable end on the left, over the party wall to the right of the middle, and over the party wall shared with number 24. A hipped lean-to roof covers a single-story shop extension to the left.

The left-hand house follows a double-depth plan with two rooms and a central staircase, plus a shop to the west. The right-hand house, originally with a shop in the front room, has a single double-depth room. The south-facing street fronts are regular, with two windows on the left and one window on the right. The left-hand house is symmetrical, featuring a central doorway with a 20th-century door. The shop to the left has a blocked doorway and a 20th-century window on the far left. All other windows are 4-pane, horned sashes. The right-hand house has a doorway on the left and a narrowed window opening on the right, with a continuous wooden lintel above. This house also has a 20th-century door. All other window and doorway openings have original cambered-arched lintels with projecting keystones. The interiors have not been inspected. The houses are included on the list for their group value.
