Description

Churchtown Stores is likely two adjoining houses that have been converted into two shops with living accommodation. It dates from the 18th century or possibly earlier. The building is constructed of killas rubble with dressed voussoirs above the original 18th-century openings, and there is some stucco and granite ashlar on the far right of the front. It features a fairly steep dry slate roof and has a brick chimney over the left-hand gable party wall. The plan is double-depth, meaning there are 18th-century rear service wings at right angles. The building was altered in the 19th century when shop fronts were added, resulting in four rooms at the front, with the two middle rooms having shopfronts. The exterior is two storeys high with an overall seven-window road front. On the left, there is a five-window front that was probably originally symmetrical with a central doorway. The ground floor has 19th-century altered openings, while the original openings above contain three original 18th-century 16-pane hornless sashes and two copies. There is a 19th-century 12-pane horizontal sliding sash at the ground floor left, and two virtually unaltered 19th-century double shopfronts with original doors, windows, and entablature towards the middle. The right side features circa mid-19th-century 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
