Description
A pair of adjoining houses, originally with shopfronts, were built in the early 19th century in Chacewater. The houses are constructed from squared and coursed elvan and killas stone, with elvan quoins, jambstone, and voussoirs. The roof is covered in asbestos slate, with a hipped roof to the left side and brick chimneys positioned in the middle, right, and over the rear wall on the left. The houses were originally designed with two rooms, a central staircase, and a shop in the left-hand room of each, alongside narrow rooms to the rear.
The symmetrical six-window front to Fore Street features three windows in each house. Later four-pane sash windows, likely contemporary with the partial blocking of the shop windows, are set within the openings. A plinth and mid-floor string course run along the front. Each house retains its original round-headed central doorway, topped with a fanlight. A C20 door is present on the left, and a four-panel door on the right. An angle window is visible in the corner, marking the position of a former shop door. The fascia positions of the original shop windows are now cemented over. Other windows are located within original openings, framed by slightly cambered arches with projecting keystones. The buildings are included on the heritage register for their group value.
