Description

3, The Square is an early 19th-century house with a shop. It is located on the west side of The Square in Chacewater. The front is stuccoed over studwork, with some painted rubble visible on the left side wall at ground floor level. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, featuring wide eaves supported on shaped wooden brackets.

The building has a wide room to the left (south) of a cross passage, with a shop to the right and service rooms at the rear. The east-facing front has a symmetrical appearance with four windows, though this is disrupted by the shop front on the right. A doorway with a 20th-century door is situated slightly right of the middle. Original 16-pane hornless sash windows with old glass remain. The double shop front to the right of the doorway retains original projecting four-light shop window bays with sidelights, although the original fascia is obscured by a 20th-century replacement. The interior remains uninspected. Chacewater retains several 19th-century shop fronts, and this building is considered an interesting example within that context.
