Description
The building is a Post Office located at No. 7 on Fore Street in Chacewater, dating from the early 19th century. It consists of two adjoining shops with houses, featuring rendered and painted studwork on the front. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos and has brick chimneys on either side over the party walls. Originally, the building had a one-room and double depth plan. The left side, now the Post Office, has been modified to a one-room layout with a 20th-century wing added to the rear.
The structure is two storeys high with a three-window front facing north. The windows include a 16-pane horned sash on the left, a 12-pane horned sash above the right side door of the Post Office, and an original hornless 16-pane sash centrally located above the right shop window. The ground floor on the left features a fine early 19th-century double-fronted shop with bowed 20-pane shop windows on either side of the entrance, which has a glazed and panelled door with an overlight. The right-hand bowed window has been slightly altered.
To the right, there is a house doorway, and the bowed shop windows are flanked by narrow pilasters. The entire front has an entablature with a fascia that bows out over the windows and a moulded cornice above. The right-hand shop, which is of a later date, has a six-panel top-glazed door in its original opening, and the shopfront features a shallow projecting bay with 20th-century glazing and an original simple fascia. The interior of the Post Office has been significantly altered, while the shop at No. 7 is noted for its fine shopfronts, which are characteristic of Chacewater.
