Description
The Britannia Hotel is a public house located on Fore Street in Chacewater, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The building features a stucco exterior over a studwork frame and has a scantle slate roof with wide eaves at the front. There is a brick chimney on the left party wall, an axial chimney, and a gable end chimney on the right, which indicates the presence of an earlier building next door on the Literary Institute site.
The hotel has a two-room double depth plan with a covered carriageway on the right side. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-window front facing south, with a central doorway and a window above the carriageway. All windows are 6-pane horned sashes framed by moulded wooden architraves. The building also features a stucco plinth and rusticated quoins. The entrance consists of a flush beaded six-panel door with an overlight.
Inside, the space has been opened up into a single room in the 20th century, with simple moulded beams in the left-hand section. The first floor was not inspected. The front of the building retains its original granite flag pavement with a granite kerb. The hotel is included for its group value.
