Description
This building comprises three shops at 10, 12 and 12A East Street, Newton Abbot. It likely dates to the early 19th century, and may have been remodelled from an 18th-century structure. The exterior is painted stucco, possibly over timber framing, with a steeply-pitched slate roof and brick stacks at the front slopes of the gable ends. The building is two storeys high, with a three-window facade. It features a dentil eaves cornice and sash windows; the first floor windows have 8/8 panes on the left, 6/6 panes in the centre, and late 19th-century 2/2 panes without horns on the right. The blank wall on the right is wider than that on the left, indicating a lack of precise symmetry in the facade. A semicircular arch on the left leads to a door providing access to the upper floors. A continuous fascia and cornice extend to the right, covering two mid-19th-century shop fronts that were originally flanked by pilasters with moulded caps. No.12 retains a 6-panel door with reeded edges to the lower panels, an overlight, panelled reveals and soffit, and a fine 6-pane plate-glass shop window with elaborate turned colonettes. No.10 has been altered and only retains the fascia and one pilaster to the left. The interior was not inspected as part of the listing process.
