Description

A pair of shops dating to the 1840s, located in Newton Abbot. They are built of painted stucco with a slate roof and have moulded stacks at the gable ends. The houses follow a double-depth plan.

The exterior is three storeys high and symmetrical, with a two-window arrangement. A moulded cornice and coped parapet wall cap the facade; the upper floors feature tripartite 6/6-pane sash windows. These windows have consoles supporting the timber mullions and panelled aprons to the second floor. A giant order of flat Tuscan pilasters flank the windows and support two equal pediments. The shop fronts were replaced in the 20th century.

The interior was not inspected. The upper floors feature an imposing Italianate commercial facade, characteristic of the 1840s, and contribute significantly to the local streetscape.
