Description

The Old Post Office, now a bookshop, was built around 1860-1870 and is designed in the Italianate style. It is constructed of painted brick and stucco with a slate roof featuring modillion cornices at the gable ends. The building has three storeys with an attic and presents a symmetrical façade with four windows across three bays. The terminal bays slightly project forward, and a rich modillion cornice runs along the top of the façade, which is detailed with pilasters that are banded on the lower floors and panelled on the second floor.

A central segmental-arched pediment sits above a semicircular-arched attic window, integrated into the parapet. The second floor features paired 2/2-pane semicircular-arched sash windows with horizontal glazing bars, adorned with moulded archivolts, keystones, and imposts. The terminal ranges have similar windows with cornices supported by consoles. The first-floor segmental-arched windows also have comparable glazing and are flanked by triangular pediments, with the paired central windows sharing a single segmental-arched pediment. The upper floors are accented by bracketed sill string courses.

At the ground level, there is a panelled granite plinth with banded rustication, and 20th-century doors are set beneath stilted semicircular arches, flanking a wide segmental arch over the shop window, all featuring rusticated voussoirs. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a notable example of the richly ornamented Italianate style that was popular for commercial structures during this period.
