Description
5 and 7 Walcot Street are two shops with living accommodation above, dating from around 1830. The building features a painted limestone ashlar facade, with a coursed rubblestone left return and a slate roof. The structure has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical front. Each shop front has tripartite windows with moulded architraves, consisting of a central six-over-six light window flanked by two four-over-four light windows, along with a central single six-over-six window. The facade is topped with a returned coped parapet and a slightly returned cornice.
A ground floor platband, dentil cornice, and fascia span the ground floor, which steps slightly forward over the doors. The original shopfront was a single symmetrical unit with recessed panelled pilasters featuring foliate caps on either side of the doors and overlights at the centre and sides. These overlights contain interlocking overlapping circular leaded panes. No. 5, located on the left, has a two-window range that occupies the left and centre of the building. It features a six-panel door on the far left and half-glazed margin paned double doors in the centre, flanked by set-back two-pane plate glass shop windows with curved upper corners, turned colonnettes, panelled soffits, and aprons. No. 7, on the right, has a shop window and door similar to one of the central doors. The first floor has a tripartite window with horns. The interiors have not been inspected but are noted to have been much altered on the ground floors.
