Description
Two houses, now shops, were built in the mid-18th century and altered around 1840. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a continuous slate mansard roof, heightened attics, and moulded stacks to the outer walls. Each house has three bays to the front, over three storeys and a basement. A continuous coped parapet sits above a stop-chamfered modillion cornice, which is stepped slightly upwards on the house at No. 37. The modillions to the cornice of No. 36 on the left have been simplified to flat blocks. Upper floors have six-over-six pane sash windows with splayed reveals to the second floor. The ground floor has a cornice over a fascia, flanked by paired fluted consoles, with a small, three-row-of-five-pane shop window centrally placed, alongside half-glazed double doors with margin-paned overlights. No. 37 has two-over-two pane sash windows to its dormers. The house at the far left has painted splayed reveals to four-over-four pane sashes without horns to the second and first floors, a platband above a raised and fielded six-panel door, and a tall margin-paned overlight. A shop front, dating from around 1840, features a dentil cornice flanked by elaborate consoles with pendants and a moulded lintel. It includes a decorative recessed panel below a moulded sill to a small, three-row-of-six-pane shop window, and a recessed half-glazed shop door with a two-pane overlight to the left. The interiors were not inspected.
