Description

32 and 33 Broad Street are a pair of shops built around 1885, designed by F.W. Gardiner, with some 20th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible, featuring moulded stacks on the returns.

The exterior is four storeys high with a symmetrical four-window front. It has a returned coped parapet, a slightly returned cornice, and a lintel frieze adorned with large paterae. There is a moulded stringcourse at the third-floor sill, platbands at the second and ground floors, and a sill band at the first floor. The windows are plate glass sash, with those on the third floor positioned at eaves level. The second-floor windows have moulded eared architraves with paterae above the lintels, while the tripartite windows on the first floor feature consoles that support entablatures and pediments over the central panes.

No. 32 has a simple fascia above the plate glass sash windows, which include tall leaded overlights, and a central set-back half-glazed door with a similar overlight. No. 33 is similar but has a 20th-century door that is not set back and lacks leaded overlights. Between the two shops, there is a four-panel door with an overlight. The interiors have not been inspected. Historical records indicate that a design exists in the City archives showing a shop front that differs from the current execution.
