Description
A pair of symmetrical shops, built in 1884 and later altered in the 20th century, designed by Major C.E. Davis. The shops are constructed from limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, leadwork to the front slope, and moulded stacks on the returns. The two-depth plan is expressed in a three-storey façade with attics and a six-window front. They feature horned plate glass windows. The sides of the building range to the sides, flanked by clasping pilasters with half-coved shells to the tympana of broken pediments to the attic storeys. The parapet to the centre is broken by four half-dormers with moulded coping to shouldered segmental arches over windows with stop-chamfered arises and curved upper corners. Cornices and friezes over the second and ground floors step forward over the pilasters. Eared moulded architraves with thin cornices to the upper part of the second-floor windows are linked to form a moulded stringcourse between the bays. A moulded sill course runs along the second floor. The first-floor windows to the outer ranges have moulded architraves and open pediments on elaborate consoles; the four central windows have similar architraves to the second floor, with foliate scrolls and shields above. The shop at No.10 has recessed half-glazed doors to the left and a two-pane plate glass shop window to the right. No.11 has a recessed 20th-century door and overlight to the inside right, with two plate glass panes to the left and one to the right. The interior was not inspected.
