Description
15, 16, and 16A Broad Street are shops with accommodation above, likely built in the mid to late 18th century and altered in the mid 19th century, possibly refronted between 1820 and 1840, and possibly rebuilt during that time. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar, with a roof that is not visible from the street.
The exterior features four storeys with three windows across the front, arranged in a two-to-one pattern. The right-hand bay is slightly set forward and includes a two-storey carriage arch on the lower floor. Nos. 15 and 16 have separate shopfronts, with No. 16 being slightly elevated but of the same design and internally connected. The surrounds date from the mid 19th century, while the shop windows are from the mid 20th century and feature a band of pointed arches at the top. The shop entrance is located to the right of No. 15, and there is a six-panel doorway to the upper floors to the right of No. 16.
The tall carriage arch at No. 16A, which provides access to the inn yard of the Royal York Hotel on George Street, has a semicircular head with a keystone. The upper floor windows are all eight-over-eight sashes within architrave surrounds, except for the first-floor window of No. 16, which is a tripartite window with stone mullions and plain sashes, lacking an architrave. The building features a cornice and a parapet. The rear elevation is not visible, and the interior has not been inspected.
