Description

26 and 27 Broad Street are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They were built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century, and a drawing from 1879 still exists. The buildings are made of limestone ashlar, which is painted on the upper floors, and the roof is not visible, featuring paired moulded stacks on the central party wall.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a three-window front. There is a continuous coped parapet and a stopped cornice with a central break for a former downpipe. The windows have splayed reveals and are horned plate glass, with one window on the second floor to the right above paired first-floor windows, and another window placed higher on the first floor to the left, which replaced a former two-storey bow window. No. 26, on the left, has a cornice over the fascia, which is supported by panelled pilasters with moulded caps, and there is an overlight above a 20th-century door to the right. This door is accompanied by steps that lead out over a plate glass shop window on brackets to the left. The shop at No. 27 has been altered.

The interiors have not been inspected. Historically, this building served as the Wheatsheaf Inn from 1800 to 1909.
