Description

Nos. 5 and 7 Feasegate is a pair of shops built in 1884, with later alterations, designed by W Brown. The shopfronts were manufactured by the Thomlinson Walker Ironfoundry. The front features cast-iron and plate glass, while the left side is made of red brick in stretcher bond, and the right side has been rebuilt in red brick. The building has two brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt, and a slate roof.

The exterior has a three-storey, six-bay front, with each shop occupying three bays. The shopfronts consist of three superimposed orders. The ground floor features part-fluted pilasters with foliate capitals, a plain fascia, and an enriched dentil cornice between acanthus brackets with segmental caps that enclose a shell motif at No. 5. The first and second floors have fluted columns encircled by bands of rosettes, with no capitals on the first floor and Ionic capitals on the second floor. There is a plain cornice on the first floor, while the second floor has a boldly projecting eaves cornice on moulded consoles between acanthus brackets capped with segmental gablets that enclose Art Nouveau floral motifs. The shop windows and doors on the ground floor have been altered. The first-floor windows are flat-headed, and the second-floor windows are segment-headed with scrolled mouldings in the spandrels.

Some panels of leaded stained glass remain in the centre lights on the first floor of No. 5 and on the second floor of both shops. The second-floor centre lights feature flat balustrades made of scrolled wrought iron. The interior has not been inspected.
