Description
39 and 40 Broad Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It extends at the rear to No. 3 Walcot Street. The building dates from the late 18th century, with mid and late 19th-century shop alterations. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a double Roman tile roof with dormers and moulded stacks on the party walls.
The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. It has a coped parapet, a stopped dentil cornice, and a second-floor sill band. The windows are six-over-six pane sash windows, some of which contain crown glass. The shop at No. 39, dating from the late 19th century, has panelled pilasters, scrolled consoles, and a cornice above a two-pane shop window, along with a set-back door that has an overlight. The shop at No. 40, which is narrower and dates from the mid-19th century, features pendants on an elaborate cornice and fascia, flanked by fluted scrolled consoles. Below the fascia, there is another fascia with scrolled consoles above a lower shop window that angles back. The interior has not been inspected.
