Description
7 and 7A Broad Street are two shops with living space above, dating from around 1800, with a mid-17th century wing at the back of No. 7A. The buildings feature early 19th century and 1919 shopfronts. The front and rear of the front range are made of limestone ashlar, while the 17th century wing is constructed from rubble with remnants of old limewash and some later ashlar rebuilding. The front range has a parapeted mansard roof, covered with Welsh slate at the front and at the rear of No. 7A, and artificial slate at the rear of No. 7. The roof has ashlar stacks at both ends, with the left stack truncated and the right stack featuring early clay pots. The 17th century wing at the back of No. 7A has a hipped roof covered in pantiles, with an ashlar stack rising from the side wall.
The exterior is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a three-window front. The ground floor of No. 7 features a 1919 shopfront designed by A.J. Taylor, while No. 7A has an altered early 19th century shopfront. The first floor has three six-over-six sash windows with plain reveals and stone sills, and the second floor has three similar windows. At the rear of No. 7A, there is a notable survival of a later 17th century outshut, which includes a long four-light mullioned window with a doorway beneath a continuous drip-mould. The south wall has stone mullioned windows that are hidden behind the later Georgian frontage. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, this building showcases concealed 17th century fabric on Broad Street, reflecting the pre-Wood vernacular style. Gilmore's Map of 1694 indicates that a building existed at this location.
