Description
No. 3 Broad Street is a shop that dates from the mid-17th century, was refronted in the 18th century, and restored in the 20th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a steep single-pitched pantile roof, with timber frame structures at the rear. The building has a single depth plan with rear additions.
The exterior consists of two storeys and a four-window front. It has a coped parapet and wide joints in the ashlar. The first floor has paired six/nine pane sash windows without horns, with those on the left side stepping slightly forward and featuring roll-moulded arises. The shop front is from the 20th century. The rear elevation is notable for retaining some of the 17th-century timber-framed structure with brick infilling.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is known to retain a 17th-century timber roof structure within the current roof space. The survival of 17th-century fabric is quite rare in Bath, where pre-Georgian structures are limited, making the remaining elements of this building particularly interesting.
