Description
4 Broad Street is a shop with accommodation above, dating from around 1752, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features limestone ashlar on the front and rear, with an area of 20th-century render at the back. It has a double pile parapeted mansard roof with double Roman tiles on both the front and rear, and rebuilt ashlar stacks that rise from the coped gable wall on the left.
The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a two-window front. On the first floor, there are two six-over-six sash windows set in cyma moulded architraves, while the ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront. There are no openings to the basement. The building features two single dormers with plate glass sashes, a band course above the ground floor, a sill band at the first floor, a moulded eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The rear elevation includes two six-over-six sashes on the first floor in flat beaded surrounds with cyma mouldings rising from stone sills, and the ground floor has two-over-two horned sashes in plain reveals with rebates for external shutters and stone sills, along with a six-panel door in a plain reveal. Access to the basement is via an area shared with Nos. 5 and 6 Broad Street. The rear range is narrower than the front, allowing access to the flat via a 20th-century external stair.
The interior was not inspected, but the ground floor has been noted as having undergone major alterations for the shop. Historically, the building was likely rebuilt around 1752 along with much of the west side of Broad Street, coinciding with the construction of King Edward's Grammar School. It served as the offices of the Bath Gas Light and Coke Company until 1853, when the company relocated to Upper Bristol Road.
