Description
No. 1 Walcot Street is an early 19th-century building located at the rear of the Saracen's Head, No. 42 Broad Street. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, which has been painted on the front. The roof is not visible, but there is a moulded stack on the left return. The building has a double depth plan and features two and three storeys with an irregular four-window front.
To the left, there is a three-storey, two-window block that has a returned coped parapet and cornice. It includes splayed reveals for paired six-over-six pane sash windows, which share sills on the upper floors. The second-floor windows have horns, and there is a ground floor platband that returns to the left and continues across the block to the right, where the ground floor is blank.
To the right, there are two two-storey blocks with a continuous parapet and cornice. The central block has a six-over-six pane sash window, and there is a wide carriage entrance on the ground floor. The block to the right features a blind window to the left of the first floor and 20th-century garage doors below.
The interior of No. 1 has been altered significantly as it is now united with the Saracen's Head. Historically, No. 1 was known as the King's Arms in 1800, suggesting that this building may date from that time.
