Description

23 and 24 High Street are two shops with accommodation above, likely built in the 1820s, possibly as a renovation of a mid-18th century building, with a mid-19th century shop front. The exterior is roughcast with a slate roof and features end stacks with brick shafts. The building has a double-depth plan with a central passageway and stands three storeys tall with a three-bay front that was originally symmetrical above the ground floor.

There is a moulded cornice below a low parapet that rises in the centre as a segmental-headed panel. The early 19th century sash windows include four-over-eight pane windows in the outer bays and three-over-six pane windows in the centre on the second floor. The first floor features a sixteen-pane sash window on the left, a twelve-pane window in the centre, and a late 19th century bay window on the left with a slate roof and moulded cornice. The sixteen-pane sash may be an early 19th century window that has been reused.

The left-hand building has an attractive mid-19th century shop front that extends across the central passage. This shop front is symmetrical, with a central doorway flanked by two-light windows. It includes channelled pilasters with incised fret moulding on either side of the doorway, and moulded consoles supporting the fascia and a moulded cornice. The glazed shop door is slightly recessed and features a low fielded panel and a blocked overlight. The two-pane round-headed windows, divided into two lights by a half shaft with a moulded capital, have ornamental wrought iron decoration in the spandrels. The right-hand building has a 20th century plate glass window and a 20th century doorway to the shop on the left. The interior has not been inspected but may retain interesting features.
