Description

Two houses, likely originally with shops on the ground floor, now used as a supermarket with accommodation above. They probably date from the mid-18th century and appear to have been built as a pair. The left-hand building was refenestrated around 1830, and a shopfront was added around 1960.

The houses are built of painted Flemish bond brick, with a slate roof and axial chimney stacks with brick shafts topped with corbelled caps. The plan is double depth. The symmetrical front has two bays on either side. The eaves have a moulded cornice supported by brackets. A 20th-century shopfront extends across a passageway. Number 20 retains 18th-century sash windows with moulded flush frames; the ground floor has probably original 12-pane sashes, while the first floor has later 4-pane sashes. The windows of Number 19 are from the early 19th century and are longer than those in Number 20. The first floor of Number 19 has recessed 12-pane sashes, and the second floor has similar 3/6-pane sashes. The ground floor has been gutted to accommodate the shop. Features of interest may survive on the upper floors.
