Description

17 High Street is a shop with accommodation above, likely built in the 1820s, featuring a shopfront from around the 1870s. The building is stuccoed with a slate roof and has a rendered chimney stack. It has a double depth plan with a passageway on the right side.

The exterior consists of three storeys and has an asymmetrical three-bay front with regular window arrangement. A stack is located at the right end. The building is topped with a richly moulded cornice in front of a low parapet that rises in the centre, which has a blind panel. The ground floor, including the passageway and shop, is noted for being the most richly detailed and finest in Crediton.

At the left end and flanking the passageway, there are pilasters with sunk panels and foliage carving halfway up. Pairs of elaborately carved consoles with foliage carving and blocks decorated with mutule are topped with pairs of cast iron finials. Above the fascia, there is a richly moulded cornice with moulded brackets, featuring decoration that includes beading, acanthus, and ball carving. Below the fascia, there is a carved order of foliage and ribbon ornament.

The shop front is symmetrical, with windows canted around a central glazed door that has a low panel and an overlight, both with rounded upper corners. The fascia is supported by two fluted cast iron columns with elaborate bases and foliage capitals. The ceiling above is timber panelled with a large roundel. Each shop window is divided into three panes by cast iron columns with unique foliage capitals, and the window glazing has rounded upper corners.

On the first floor, there are three tall windows with moulded stucco architraves, fitted with 20th-century two-pane sashes, and three smaller similar windows on the second floor, also reglazed in the same style. The interior of the ground floor, which was inspected, features a well-preserved late 19th-century shop interior, including an old counter and drawers for haberdashery. This building is notable for its fine shop front and good interior.
