Description
The National Westminster Bank is a bank dating to around 1870. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with painted Ham Hill stone dressings, and has a slate roof with brick stacks. The building is in an eclectic Victorian style.
The main front, facing the High Street, is divided into three bays, with a projecting corner bay in the centre. It has two storeys and an attic. A plainer bay adjoins to the left in Market Street, with a carriage entrance at the far left end, also in Market Street. The corner bay is divided into three on the ground floor by Tuscan columns, with a doorway featuring rounded corners and a keyblock above, leading to the banking hall. The ground floor windows are flanked by windows with similar embrasures, with 20th-century glazing. Above the fascia is a dentil cornice and moulded string. The first floor has a Venetian window with a stone architrave, a keyblock to the centre light, and sill brackets; all first-floor windows retain their original 4-pane sashes with margin panes. The attic has a segmental-headed dormer with a moulded architrave. The High Street elevation features three round-headed ground-floor windows with pointed stone architraves and incised decoration, again with 20th-century glazing. The Market Street section of the main block is in a matching style, with two similar ground-floor windows and a tall doorway to the left with a pointed-arched architrave. The left-hand bay in Market Street is plainer, with a platband at first floor level, rusticated quoins, and a pair of round-headed windows to each storey, featuring stone architraves. A wall alongside contains a round-headed arched carriage entrance filled with boarded doors. The banking hall’s interior has been modernised, but further 19th-century features may remain. The building is included in the listing because of its group value.
