Description
No. 2 Market Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built around 1836 as part of a larger development that moved the market from the High Street. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with original pointing and features a slate roof behind a parapet, along with end stacks that have brick shafts. It is designed in the Italianate style and has a double-depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide with a central entrance and stair.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front with stuccoed pilasters on the left and right. There are platbands at the first and second floor levels that extend around the pilasters, as well as a moulded cornice below the parapet. The central entrance features a stuccoed Ionic doorcase that matches a nearby building, with an entablature and cornice. The round-headed doorway has panelled reveals and an original fanlight with spoke glazing bars and margin panes that include stained glass. The original front door has been replaced with a 20th-century small-pane timber door.
All the windows are original and have moulded architraves. The ground floor windows are set in segmental-headed recesses and are glazed with 12-pane sashes. The first floor has three high-transomed casements with margin panes, while the second floor features three round-headed sash windows with spoke glazing bars. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have a stick baluster stair with a ramped handrail, and other interesting features may still be present. Historically, the building is said to have been used as a rent office by the Buller estate. The architectural quality of the market area development is notably sophisticated for a small provincial town, and the remaining buildings form an important group.
